O'Grady is the daughter of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton within Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving into Los Angeles. Her first job was model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered an actress in the recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred in a variety of other shows as well as appeared in made-for films and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue which is a police drama. Her role as the tall and blonde secretary of the squad was performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years, she received an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by the Drama Series. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for her outstanding performance in the cast of an action series.
