O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was a high school student. The singer made it through to the top 100 rounds when judges applauded her singing ability. Her performance was highly applauded by the judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and the bottom 2. Judges were amazed at her performance and suggested viewers choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the news headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
